I hope enjoy~💙💜💚❤️🧡💛
Let's be friends! 😊💕
30 years since debut. Ken Miyake, who has always been the embodiment of an "idol" existence, has released a photo book entitled "THE iDOL Miyake Ken Photo Book" (Parco Publishing), which he himself directed and which takes as its theme his origins.
In addition, to commemorate the publication of the photo book, a photo exhibition entitled "KEN MIYAKE PHOTO EXHIBITION "THE iDOL" is currently being held at Shibuya Parco's "PARCO MUSEUM TOKYO."
This photobook was created with photographers Shun Omiyama and Yoko Kusano, stylist TEPPEI, with the theme "The Gap Between Illusion and Reality." The exhibition will also feature photos not included in the photobook, exhibition-exclusive collage works, and original goods for sale.
The subject, Miyake Ken, brings to light a new image of an idol. We talked to Miyake and TEPPEI, who handled styling, about the thoughts and production background behind the image.
-🧡-🧸-🧡-
WWD : When did you start planning this photo book?
Miyake Ken : I had been thinking about a photo book for about two years. It was also the right time for me to start new activities as "Miyake Ken." While having dinner at a sushi restaurant with TEPPEI, a stylist I've known for many years, we talked about how it would be nice to turn myself into a work of art. When I told TEPPEI that I wanted to use the theme of "the gap between illusion and reality," he immediately replied, "Let's do it." From there, TEPPEI mentioned the name of Omiyama-san, who took the photos this time.
TEPPEI : I was talking to Ken at a sushi restaurant. The Ken I was referring to was Miyake Ken, who is known to everyone and is in the public. So I was always wondering in what world line this person was living in. As he continues to live his life as an idol, where is the real Ken-san? It was from this conversation that the phrase "between illusion and reality" came about. So I recommend Omiyama-san as a photographer who can really capture the real world in a slightly fantastical way.
WWD : Before that, had you ever worked with Omiyama?
Miyake : I had never done any work with him myself. It was TEPPEI introduced me to him as a photographer who captures the "gap between virtual and real," so I thought, "so we decided to let's ask him to do it."
WWD : Another person who was a photographer was Yoko Kusano-san, right?
Miyake : It was Omiyama's suggestion that Kusano be the director. Omiyama would shoot the "virtual image," and Kusano would record the "real thing," that is, what happened behind the scenes. To be honest, I wanted to start filming as soon as I first talked to TEPPEI, but due to preparations and various adjustments, we actually started filming in July last year.
TEPPEI : Ideally, it would be better if we could shoot regularly, like every month or every week. But in reality, that’s pretty difficult… When this project started, there was a plan to shoot it for a year, starting on Ken’s birthday (July 2nd).
Miyake : at first, I had the idea to shoot the film starting from my birthday on July 2nd. However, due to various circumstances, things didn’t go as planned. However, this project finally got underway last summer.
WWD : When you asked Omiyama-san to take your photos, did you make any requests?
Miyake : We decided on the title "THE iDOL" from the beginning, which is the same as my album title, and I talked about the significance of being a "subject" again after being an idol for 30 years. On top of that, we shared the concept of "between illusion and reality", and we talked about how this theme is related to the lyrics of my song “kanashī hodo ni aidoru,” and how the title of this photo book was the same as, or related to, the album of the same name that I released previously.
WWD : Was the idea for a photo exhibition something that was in your mind from the planning stages of the photo book?
Miyake : No, I had no plans to do so at all at first. Initially, I was planning to self-publish and sell the book online. However, an art director from YAR, Yokoyama-san, told me, "More people should know what you usually talk and think". So, when we were looking for a way to expand our business scope instead of just running it internally, we received an offer from Parco Publishing to publish the book. Yokoyama then encouraged me to hold a photo exhibition so that more people could see it.
WWD : Did you personally select the works that will be exhibited in the exhibition?
Miyake : I was in charge of overall supervision, but since it was the work of two photographers, the photo selection was mostly done by Omiyama-san and Kusano-san. The photo book was originally planned to be 148 pages long, but it ended up being 128 pages, so it also contains some exhibiting unpublished photographs that could not be included. Also, these collage works are limited to the exhibition. Since the photobook is a complete work, I wondered if there was a way to present the works in a different way that would give a greater sense of expansiveness, so I came up with this exhibition structure.
WWD : TEPPEI-san, was there anything you paid particular attention to when styling this photobook?
TEPPEI : Although it is called a photo book, we feel it is closer to a "collection of works." Ken is not only the "subject," but we also thought of it as a work that reflects his own lifestyle, and Ken directed even the smallest details. Both photographers also had their own ideas. Within that, I thought about what role fashion would play and created the styling.
So, unlike my usual fashion shoots, I did a fairly conceptual styling. I aimed for styling that goes beyond the image of "idol Miyake Ken" that everyone knows, and shows him as he really is.
In this photobook, the location where he is is also quite important. For example, that photo (the one behind Miyake) was taken spontaneously at under Shibuya Parco, and shows Ken standing in line with a relaxed expression, as if he had just woken up. It has a bit of a fantasy, but it's also a real situation that actually happened.
Miyake : Yes, it was a completely unintentional shot. It just so happened that when I took the photo, there were a lot of people lining up, but because they were all busy with their own things, they didn't notice me at all. It was a rare opportunity to take a photo with most people facing forward. So I thought, "This is my chance," and I just lined up and took the photo.
TEPPEI : There are also some scenes where he lying down in the square, which is impossible in reality. However, Omiyama-san deliberately made a fictional story realistic and captured that worldview. How to express the "gap between fiction and reality" was a very important theme this time.
Miyake : It makes reality a little more fantastic. How to capture the unreal in a realistic way? We all tried various things like this while filming.
WWD : By the way, no one noticed that you were filming this scene (under Shibuya Parco)?
Miyake : No one noticed at all.
TEPPEI : The people around me were concentrating on something completely different (LOL). That's why it's meaningless if the fashion doesn't have a strong presence. This time we’ve had the received collaborations from various brands, and some items were mixed with my own archives to create a collection.
-🧡-🧸-🧡-
What are the highlights of the photo exhibition?
WWD : Do you have a favorite shot from this exhibition?
Miyake : That was the hardest one... But I really liked the collages I mentioned earlier. That's why I've placed them in the back space of the exhibition.
TEPPEI : That collage was made by combining photographs of both Omiyama-san and Kusano-san. The monochrome parts are by Kusano, and the color parts are by Omiyama.
Miyake : This exhibition is not only my photo exhibition, but also a photo exhibition by Omiyama-san, Kusano-san, and TEPPEI-kun. With that in mind, We have created a structure that gives it a collaborative feel.
WWD : What was it like working with Omiyama-san and Kusano-san?
Miyake : We both took photos on film, so we had no idea what kind of photos we were taking on location. That was interesting. I was excited to see the final result. The photos of the two of us that were actually printed out were really beautiful.
TEPPEI : It may seem obvious, but it was interesting to see how even though we were in the same space and taking pictures at the same time, the way we framed the photos we took was completely different.
Miyake : The final result turned out exactly as we had originally planned, with Omiyama photographing the “virtual images” and Kusano photographing the “reality.” That’s why I put a lot of thought into the balance of how the photos were arranged in the photo book. I changed the order many times before finally arriving at the current form. In fact, there are enough photo layouts to fill two books. And this book is so thick that it could have published another volume.
That's why the cover of the photo book is designed like double A-side. The front side is Omiyama's work and the back side is Kusano's work. You can start reading from one of them, and both are made with the feeling that they are "covers."
WWD : It seems like there's a lot of goods to choose from this time around. What do you recommend?
Miyake : There is a gachapon machine for acrylic key chains. There are 10 types in total, so I hope you will collect them all. Also, for the first time, I'm also selling photos of the exhibited works. This is the first time my photos have been sold, so I think this is a very rare opportunity.
TEPPEI : It's really special that Miyake's photos are for sale. I think fans definitely don't want to miss.
-🧡-🧸-🧡-
Acting as an "idol"
WWD : This photo book has "idol" in the title. It's the same title as last year's album, but what do you think makes an "ideal idol"?
Miyake : As I mentioned at the time of the album release, when I left the group, I also had the option to end my activities as an idol. However, I decided to become an “idol” once again. Before continuing my activities, I wondered, “What exactly is an idol?” and looked it up in the dictionary. The words that came up were “illusion” and “idol.” At that time, I interpreted the words as, “An idol is someone who is nothing and can be anything.” “An idol is someone who can become anything."
"Fantasy" and "idol" are layered images. I think that really symbolizes the existence of idols. That's why I decided that I wanted to be an "idol" rather than an "artist" or "performer". That's the word that felt best to me.
WWD : Is there anything you would like to do in the future?
Miyake : I think there is still room to exploration of the theme of "idols" as a concept. So I want to explore it a bit more. I want to further express the depth and potential that idols have.
WWD : Miyake-san, you really love art. Do you have any desire to become an artist and exhibit your work?
Miyake : I thought this photo exhibition is an "art piece" in a sense. So I thought it would be interesting if I could get involved in this kind of activity. And…of course I'm interested.
WWD : Are you considering taking up your own photographs, painting, or other creative endeavors?
Miyake : I like photography and I also like drawing. However, I haven't really thought about "creating a work with my own hands and presenting it." The photos I take aren't good enough to be released to the public (LOL).
TEPPEI : But I'm sure your photos will be interesting. I'd love to see them.

_Three months of this year have passed so quickly. How are you doing?_
I've been redecorating my room since the end of last year, putting in new furniture and changing out the art on display. I've been enjoying me time like this since the end of last year. One of the things I want to do this year is start exercising more from the beginning of the year! Last year's concert tour made me keenly aware of my lack of physical strength. I'm sure my performance would improve if I combined some core training and aerobic exercise, but for some reason I just can't find the motivation to do it. When I was in my 20s, I went to the boxing gym four times a week, and also ran and worked out at the gym six times a week. My body fat percentage at that time was 4%! I can't do it like I did back then, but I'm thinking about getting started this year.
By the way, about maintaining my health, last year I often caught the colds. My immune system may be weak due to lack of sleep. Actually, the night before the live performance, I was really worried that I wasn't prepared enough, so I only sleep for about an hour. Ah, I went to a hot spring at the beginning of the year, but I couldn't sleep after changing my pillow. So, It's also important to create an environment where you can sleep soundly. This would be ideal, but this year I'm going to aim to go to bed at 10pm and get up early. Lately, I've been trying to take walks during the day as a way to improve my health. My strategy is to expose myself to sunlight and tire my body (LOL). I try this so I can sleep when I feel tired at night.
_"2024 Live Performance Another me: The otherside Presented by KEN MIYAKE" is currently available on Amazon Prime Video. Please tell us your thoughts about last year's tour._
I feel like I need to educate people more (LOL). The other day, I went to see someone's live performance and was surprised by how incredibly exciting it was. My concert wasn't designed to be particularly exciting, so I felt the need to guide everyone so that they can get even more excited. We need to get more in sync with everyone when pounding mochi (LOL). In the future, I would like to call out to people, "Everyone let`s sing!" and create an atmosphere where people can sing with all their might when I point the microphone at them. What made me happy was that everyone learned the choreography and danced together. In response to everyone's efforts, I personally wanted to focus on giving more fan service! Every time I perform, I want to respond to more of the messages on the fans, but when I'm singing alone I just don't have the time...Next time I think I'll write two songs that I won't sing, just for fan service (LOL).
_This year, it looks like IVY members will have many opportunities to see Miyake Ken as an actor._
The film “Sunset Sunrise” was released in January. This job was taken about a year ago. At the time of filming, I had just transferred to my current agency and wanted to start afresh with a cleaner look, but I had grown a beard and dyed my hair two-tone orange for the role, so I was constantly told that I looked “worse”. At the time, I couldn't say, “It's for the role!” (LOL). The film is set in Sanriku about 10 years after the Great East Japan Earthquake, and although it deals with sensitive themes such as the earthquake and the coronavirus pandemic, it is also a heartwarming story with tears and laughter. Now that society is feeling more excited, so I hope everyone will go see the film in the cinema. Recently, I was filming a drama. This work will be released in the spring, and filming has already finished, but the director told me that I should do more acting an actor, and I received words of praise from him, so I still feel happy (LOL).
_Last year, your schedule was such that you couldn't rest even if you had a cold. So, did that affect your diet or or anything like that? Your body shape hasn't changed at all, right?_
I'm eating normally and properly. I think I'm the type of person who doesn't gain weight easily, because even though if I eat a lot, I somehow manage to balance it out. I'm not taking any special supplements or doing anything special. That's why people call me the "miracle 40-year-old," but maybe it really is a miracle (LOL). While I was getting changed in the dressing room, I stood in front of the mirror and muttered, "Oh, what a sloppy body I've become," and the staff were surprised and asked, "Where?" I personally can't stand the thought of having even a little bit of fat around my stomach that can be pinched. I think the good thing is when the fat on my stomach can't be pinched. So, now this is not a good body shape for me. But still, I'm grateful when people call it a "miracle something." I eat as much as I want, whatever I want...
_At its worst, you're eating French fries at 4:30 in the morning, right? (I checked with the manager.)_
I was also told that I eat a lot of potato chips (LOL). The next morning, I had heartburn and thought, "Damn." The bare minimum is up to your mid-40s! From this point on, it becomes harder to build muscle and easier to gain fat but harder to lose it. So I really have to be careful! Sometimes I finish work and have dinner at midnight, but then I don't eat anything until the afternoon, so there's always at least 16 hours between meals. It's not that I'm careful, but I only eat when my stomach is empty, and I don't eat if I'm not hungry. Two meals a day. So I don't overeating, and of course I think I eat in a way that doesn't make me gain weight.
_Apparently, you often go out to eat hot and sour noodles with the sushi chef._
It's become a bit of a routine with the head chef at a sushi restaurant. Today we had hot and sour noodles and spring rolls together again. There were no steamed shrimp dumplings, so I had chive buns instead. The chef and I have similar taste preferences and values when it comes to food. While watching the chef slurp his ramen hungrily, I took a bite of the same ramen. This time is very healing for me. I don't get takeout food unless it's absolutely necessary. I always drive my car or motorcycle to go out to eat. I want to eat it hot and fresh, so I don't want it to get cold by the time I get it home. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I couldn't eat in the restaurant, so I would get takeout and eat it in my car because I didn't want it to get cold by the time I got home. I don't like rice that is too cold. I have a strong obsession with food. I can't forgive it if it's not delicious when I eat it (LOL). For example, I know that the taste of the food at my favorite restaurants changes depending on the chef, so I make sure to check who will be in the kitchen that day before going to the restaurant. That's how meticulous I`m in every meal (LOL).
_Is there no option to cook your own food?_
Nope. I would if I had a basic understanding of cooking and could make it quickly, but it takes time to get to that point, so I don't. When it comes to food, there's never a day where I can say "I can eat anything" and I eat what I want, but sometimes I have to restrain myself from eating something I want because I'm worried about how I'm going to work the next day. If I didn't have to worry about anything, I'd like to have a flour festival on the level of a bread festival somewhere (LOL). This isn't being stubborn or anything, it's just a natural thing to do when you're in public.
_"APT" by BLACKPINK Rosé and Bruno Mars was a huge hit all over the world, but we live in a world where it could happen that the two of them end up dancing to "Superstar."_
I think so too. We live in an age where we don't know when, where, or who will catch our attention. So, out of curiosity, I decided to dive into the world of Tik Tok. Someone commented that, "If TikTok had existed when Ken was in his 20s, he would have definitely been at the top of the world," and I thought that it might certainly suit for me, so even though I'm in my 40s, I still enjoy recording every day. I think there will be many opportunities to meet everyone this year, so please look forward to it. I'm so grateful to everyone every day! Thank you so much. I'm sure that this year will be a smash hit. Let's have fun together by making the most of various media such as SNS and radio. Thank you for your continued support this year.
_Lastly please give a message to everyone in IVY._
This is the first digital magazine released of the year, so happy new year! (LOL). Last year, I got into the world of social media and started doing live streams on YouTube, subscription streams, and posting daily on TikTok. I know that everyone at IVY is working hard every day to increase the number of views. Reading everyone's comments is a daily routine and something I enjoy. Since diving into the world of social media, I`ve come to realise firsthand the importance of numbers. Personally, I don't like a world where we`re exposed to numbers, but in this age of idol wars, social media and numbers have become inseparable and important. I'm so grateful for everyone's time and contributions. I think there`re some people who still find it hard to keep up with a world like this. I think that even people who were not comfortable using social media started using it because I was using it. I'm truly grateful for that. And thank you to everyone who came to our shows last year. And for those who unfortunately couldn't attend, be sure to check it out on Amazon Prime Video. I'm looking forward to seeing you all again at this year's concert.
Currently I upload videos using my own music on Tik Tok every day, and I created "Superstar" with Tik Tok's worldview in mind. I'm happy when people who don't know me find me and dance to my music, use my songs, and my music spreads. The interesting thing about Tik Tok is that songs can take on a life of their own and reach people overseas. Also, please listen to my newly released digital single "taxi".
PS.
"☆An Ordinary Day"
There are days in the year when nothing special happens. I simply sink into my bed and suddenly realize it's pitch black outside the window.
On days like that, I feel like blaming myself, saying, "Ah… The day is over…," or "I'm so careless," but at those times, everyone’s faces suddenly come to my mind.
That's right, let's get my voices heard by everyone.
But, what should we do next...?
Will it make everyone's hearts pounding?
My thoughts go round and round. Before I knew it, the day was over again.
I wonder what I'm doing...?
But I'm sure everyone has had days like this.
When that happens, I want you to remember me.
I'm the same way.
You may just be spending today without really thinking about it.
WE live in this era together.
So please don't forget that.
You are never alone, no matter what the time.
Thank you with all my love.

TRANSLATION VOCE 2024.07.12 Miyake Ken🧡🧸
Jul. 27th, 2024 05:27 pmPART 1
[Ken Miyake] I think the ability to take on many different colors is the defining characteristic of idols - "THE iDOL"
“I want all my fans to let go of themselves, surrender to the music and dance.”
“This time, I created danceable songs so that listeners can follow get into the rhythm, feel the groove while dancing. When I say dancing, I don't mean doing complicated choreography, but I want many people to feel the feeling of breaking free, letting yourself sway to the music. That aspect is also included in the album's theme. The jacket photo was also taken with the concept of light and dance, using sound as a symbol of light, so I had the camera capture a beautiful moment."
_You can see the performance of songs from this album at the concert "2024 Live Performance The Otherside: Another Me Presented by KEN MIYAKE" which will be held in June. (※Content is at the time of interview)_
“Yeah..That's right. That's why I want all my fans to enjoy themselves and sway their bodies at this concert. Of course, I'm very grateful for the fans who are watching me through the show without blinking an eye😂 (LOL), but since they've come all the way to see me, I want them to let go and dance.”
_What is the meaning behind the title?_
“Although the songs on "Ready To Dance" and "iDOLING" are the main focus of this album, I also created this album with myself as the subject That`s why, I titled it THE iDOL.”
_Miyake-san, was there a moment when you realized that you were an “idol”?_
“I think that being an idol means always having the idea of putting fans first in my mind. I've always thought about what my fans think, rather than what I think. I don't know the definition of an idol, but I personally, think that being able to take on many different colors is an idol's characteristic. The way you express yourself changes depending on the song, and you can show many different sides to it. I also change depending on the situation, whether I'm on stage, on stage theater, on variety shows....., and in a sense, being borderless is what makes me an idol.”
"Protection from UV light and beautiful skin are two things that you`ve to do every day!"
Have you always been particular about skin care and beauty?_
“Oh, maybe I recommended it to Kitayama in Hawaii😄(LOL). After all, I take good care of my skin. I`ve naturally dry skin, so I moisturize well, and even though my skin can feel rough at times, when it's the least of my worries, I try to moisturize more carefully than usual, use anti-inflammatory products, and take care of it. that's before it gets worse. Another thing is UV protection. UV light can cause deteriorate to people and things, such as discoloration of walls or books next to windows. I've been wearing sunscreen regularly since I was about 30, because it can cause aging. I also brought an umbrella. I wonder if everyone has an umbrella🤔”
“Yeah! You can carry shade with you! I've been recommending umbrellas for a long time, but in summer, it's especially hard for women to get their make-up messed up, and it's been hot lately, so it's a good measure against heatstroke, so you probably don't need to go without an umbrella.. UV protection and beautiful skin are cumulative, right?”
_I feel that the results of all this accumulated effort are evident in Miyake-san's beautiful skin._
“Nope, that's not true😅. However, if you are willing to accept damage to your skin without fear, then I think that's a fine...it`s your choice. In the end, beauty comes from the person themselves. And it's not just about skin, nowadays there`re many beauty methods to make yourself beautiful, but I think there`re many things you can do easily in your daily life without spending a lot of money. Like, stop slouching and improve your posture, or stretch and move your body. Beauty can be seen from attitudes such as a person's minimum level of cleanliness and the way you eat, so I think it would be great if we could appreciate those aspects. Also, stress can make your skin rough, so it's important to refresh yourself😄”
_We think so too. By the way, what is your latest method of refreshing yourself?_
“Digital detox. Lately I've been doing this by turning off my smartphone before going to sleep and don't let it in my bedroom. Just doing this has made a big difference in how I wake up. Good quality sleep also has an effect on our skin, so I recommend it to everyone.”

Ken Miyake released his solo album “THE iDOL" on June 5th. After 30 years of being an idol, Miyake has finally reached the point at his own profession, way of life, and “idol” culture that undoubtedly represents modern Japan.
Although the album is packed with a wide variety of music genres, typical of 2020s J-POP, what is most impressive is the strong overall feeling of the album. One cannot help but feel Miyake's strong respect and passion for the art he loves. Each song, created with a number of artists including SIRUP, Micro, and WurtS, has a twist to it, achieving the ideal balance of pop songs that can be listened to casually or delved into deeply. July marked one year since Ken Miyake moved to the agency TOBE. How did Miyake Ken get to “THE iDOL”?
-🧡-🧸-🧡-
Ken Miyake : Yep... I asked artists that I usually like to listen to, as well as people who fit my current mood and who provided me with songs😀However, because the previous mini album “NEWWW” (released in November 2022) had a lot of darker songs overall, I think the difference is that this time we thought “to make it more pop” gathered songs that were brighter overall.
WWD : The most striking thing about the title is the straightforward but meaningful one, “THE iDOL”. Is the metaphorical use of “idol” related to the milestone of your 30th anniversary?
Miyake: This time, I wanted to have young and up-and-coming creators provide songs to bring out a new side of me, who has been in the idol industry for 30 years. Another thing is, I can't say anything concrete yet, but I'm still thinking about doing a project based on myself, and that's also related to that. When I finished my activities as a group and started my solo activities, I thought deeply about my future. In other words, To put it bluntly, I didn't have to choose to be an idol. But, when I decided to pursue a career as an idol, I had to face the question, “What is Ken Miyake like as an idol?” It was at that time that the singles “Ready To Dance” and “iDOLING” were released. These are the songs I made with SIRUP and Micro respectively, and I made them through trial and error based on what was in my head and their opinions, so these two songs are about the real me. With the collection of other songs around “Ready To Dance” and “iDOLING”, the album “THE iDOL” is completed.
WWD : “iDOLING” clearly depicts not only the glamor of being an idol, but also the struggles.
Miyake : “iDOLING” is a song I wrote during a difficult time when I couldn't tell if my fans loved me as “the person Ken Miyake” or if they loved me as the “idol Ken Miyake”. I decided to start out as a solo artist, but when I started working in a new place, I started to wonder “how do I look” and “what people think of me”.
Firstly, this song is a sequel to the solo song "Kanashii Hodo Ni A I Do Ru" that I made with Micro. The song is based on the 2010 version of Kyoko Koizumi's famous song "nantettatte aidoru", and I put my feelings about idols and my views on love at the time into it. f I made a sequel to that song with Micro again, it wouldn't work unless I included the past, present, and future of my 30 years as an idol, including what I'm thinking right now. With that in mind, I created a song that combines my real struggles at that time.WWD : As symbolized by the phrase “Every time I'm sad, I'm an IDOL [Kanashimu tabi ni aidoru]”, it's impressive that the lyrics even touch on the contradictions that idols face, in that even their worries can be turned into art.
Miyake : Personally, when it comes to major and minor, I prefer songs with minor chords. As with “Kanashii Hodo Ni A I Do Ru”, this time “iDOLING” is also made with images of disco from the 1970s, and “This is a song that makes you want to dance, with a rhythm that makes everyone want to dance. However, the melody line that flows through the song is a bit sad,” that's what I was aiming for as a concept. I also think that my fans can sense the slight loneliness and sadness that comes from inside me. I made the song to be able to put even the subtleties of those emotions into it without hiding them to the limit.
WWD : Even though you had to worry and suffer, you ended up making a song that shows a strong sense of trust in your fans.
Miyake : Yeah... There`re two themes in terms of the contents of the album this time. The first is “A message to all fans”. There`re many codes from me to my fans scattered throughout the 14 songs (12 songs + 2 bonus tracks), and I've made it so that the codes will be deciphered when you listen to this album😉. The other is a collection of universal love songs that anyone can enjoy. Since I made it with these two themes as the concept, I gave it the title “THE iDOL”.
WWD : I think that both “Ready To Dance” with SIRUP and “iDOLING” with Micro are songs that contain Miyake-san's thoughts and direction. Is it the same for your other songs?
Miyake: Nope, it would be boring if all the songs were like that, so I deliberately tried not to direct all the songs. For example, the song “BOY”. There`s a staff member who works as a DJ at a cafe that I often go to. When we talked, he said, “My friend sent me this song and said, “I made a great demo”. When I listened to it, it was really good. This song was created from such a coincidence connection.
WWD: The balance between intentionality and randomness has a big impact on the content and mood of a work.
Miyake : This applies not only to music but also to art, but I really like works and expressions that leave room for imagination. That's why I want to leave that space in my work, and I want people to enjoy playing with it. Of course there`s a sense of satisfaction in seeing the hints being resolved, but I don't think it's necessary for all hints to be resolved, and I think that's what makes it interesting.
WWD : Miyake-san has previously stated that, “An artist is someone who creates things, and I'm just an idol”, but it feels like his producing/directing work on this album, “THE iDOL”, including the overall concept creation, strongly exudes the image of “artist Ken Miyake”.
Miyake: When the group was disbanded, I thought about what I should call myself. At that time, the word “idol” seemed most suitable to me. Although each person has their own interpretation of the word, in my case, I believe that someone who creates something from nothing is a creator and artist, and I have such talented creators and artists around me and among my friends. among my friends and surroundings. So, "an artist?... No, that's not it”. “Artist?...No.” Of course, I like thinking about things with an artistic mindset, and I also like creative things, so I want to pursue that. However, because I`ve great respect for creators and artists, I decided I don't want to call myself that. When I looked up the word idol in the dictionary again, the words "idol" and "illusion" came up, and when I saw those words, I thought, “idol = a being that can become anything”.
WWD : Oh, I see.
Miyake : That's why I want to make this album “THE iDOL” to be timeless and genreless. This is because the existence of idols has the characteristic of being able to transcend borders. Idols are beings who can take on any color and move freely between different places. It's not just about music, but also about work. Sometimes I appear on variety shows, sometimes I work in theater, and sometimes I sing. That's why I want to call myself an idol again🙃
WWD : In recent years, Miyake-san's statements and actions have revealed an awareness of the issues surrounding idol culture and a desire to work toward improving it.
Miyake : I don't want to say it out loudly because it sounds presumptuous, but in the 30 years I've been an idol, I firmly believe that my great predecessors who have expanded the scope of the idol job in my 30 years of being an idol, and I`ve respect and gratitude for them. And because I feel there`s strong potential in idol culture, I would like to update it. That's because there`s a culture in Japan where idols are looked down upon as not having expertise, or are consumed in the short term. I felt like changing this situation in a positive direction.
WWD : We think short-term consumption aspect is a point that is especially pointed out when it comes to female idols, but do you think that it's the same for male idols?
Miyake : That's right. In the case of male idols, SMAP has expanded the scope of its activities for my generation. I benefited from that. However, we live in an era of idol warring states even more so than we did, and there`re many different forms of idols, and I think it's a really tough time to survive. In this era, It's precisely because of this era that I want to be able to create a new path for young idols by combining idols with something outside of them.
WWD : Yeah…that SMAP has expanded the boundaries of idols, both in terms of age and range of activities.
Miyake : SMAP is definitely an unshakable idol image for me, and they represent the essence of my youth, because I was able to spend impressionable years with them. So, they`re something that will never fade😀
WWD : In the dance scene of the music video for “iDOLING” , we felt a sense of respect for the history of idol culture, going through Masahiro Nakai, whom you respect, to Michael Jackson. Is “inheritance of idol culture" something that you`re conscious of?
Miyake : I'm not consciously working to inherit something. However, after being active as an idol for 30 years, I've definitely reached a point in my life where I need to think about how I want to build the path of idols in the future😉Every day I think about things like “What should I do?” and “What can I do as an idol, Ken Miyake?” Ken Miyake created “Idol Ken Miyake”. If I can keep doing that throughout my life, I'm sure one day it will become some kind of “creative activity”.

Jul. 18th, 2024 11:33 pm“Atsushi Kawahara-san is a Japanese artist who has been creating works for 50 years with the concept of the “Today Series”, which is based on the concept of painting only the date of creation on canvas, completing it today, or discarding it if it is not completed. He`s a representative conceptual artist. As I was thinking about what to do with my activities in the future, I suddenly thought of him. If I consider myself the creator of Ken Miyake's idol “work”, I wonder how long I can continue creating it in the future, and I wonder if it can become a conceptual work that I`ll dedicate my own life to. When I first finished my group activities, I had the choice to no longer be an idol, but with that feeling in my mind I decided to continue. And since I`m continuing, I want to update the concept of an idol over the long term”.
Possibility. And update. Using words that exude the spirit of a pioneer, Miyake-san repeatedly stated throughout the interview, “I`m who I`m today because of the blessings of my predecessors who created and expanded idol culture.”
Even though he`s "solo", he never considers himself "alone". Instead of focusing on an independent perspective, he looked at the whole picture and said, “I hope that by presenting idol x something🧡, I can create a brighter future for younger idols😉”

Ken Miyake Determination and readiness as an idol
1st Interview
Ken Miyake, who celebrating his 30th anniversary since his debut, talked about his determination to become an idol.
“When I decided to go solo after transferring…”
Ken Miyake made his solo debut two years ago and will soon celebrate his 30th anniversary. He talked about the thoughts behind the new album “THE iDOL” released on June 5, 2024, and his commitment to becoming an “idol” who feels limitless possibilities. He said he made this decision because he`s active as a solo idol.
Occupation : idol. That's how Ken Miyake calls himself in his Twitter (now X) profile, which he opened two years ago when he made his solo debut. It was a declaration of his determination to continue living as idols even though he`s no longer in a group.
“When I decided to go solo, I thought about who I wanted to become, and I thought calling myself an “idol” would be the most appropriate. At that time, I looked up the word “idol” again, and found that it had many various meanings, including “figure” and “fantasy”, and I interpreted it as [someone who can become anything].”
What he`s looking at is something much broader than himself; the concept and existence of "idol". This is his respect and gratitude for the world that has inspired him to dream, aspire and drive him forward for the 30 years since he entered the entertainment industry at the age of 13.
“Many idols who have led the way up to now have expanded their possibilities little by little as they've gone on to various successes, and I believe that I`m here today thanks to that. Besides, I've gained a lot from my 30 years of activity, and that has given me some confidence. Based on that, I realized that I must be the one to pave the way for those who follow me as an idol, and I also wanted to pursue broadening my own potential😉”
Nowadays, idols have become multi-talented figures who are active not only in singing and dancing, but also in various fields such as acting and variety shows.
“I think the ability to transcend borders is a defining characteristic of idols. When I say borders, I don't just mean working in various genres that aren't limited to singing and dancing, but also in a broader sense, such as crossing national borders and cultural barriers. In a sense, this can be called transparency, like the ability to take on any color.”
On the other hand, when it comes to idols, many people still have the impression that they`re incomplete in society. That is why they`re sometimes called "artists". “This is just my opinion, but…”.
“I think an artist is someone who creates something from scratch. Although I produce the music, but I don't write the lyrics or compose the music; I'm simply the one who is provided with the songs. But I don't have any negative feelings about it. It's up to me to decide how to express and produce the songs I collaborate with the artists to create🙂 So by being influenced by something, there`s a great deal of potential for it to become something new, which means it's genreless. That high level of freedom is what makes being an idol so attractive🥰.”
“I think it's no easy feat to create something from nothing. There`re many creators close to me who do this kind of work, and because I know how difficult of creating something, I don't want to take them lightly and I want to show my respect for them😀.”
This time Miyake-san moved his activities to a new place and released his first album. The title is “IDOL”. A diverse range of artists with different genres, careers and backgrounds are participating in the song provision, from veterans like Micro, who established a new genre called Hawaiian reggae, which combines elements of Jamaican and Hawaiian music; SIRUP, who is attracting attention for his sophisticated songs that fuse soul, R&B and hip hop; WurtS, who is currently attracting attention by making waves on YouTube and TikTok; and up-and-coming singer-songwriter Miyake Buki, a current university student who is garnering attention for his unique worldview that mixes pop and surrealism. It`s truly a diverse and gorgeous album.
“I communicated very closely with each of them, and I was able to convey in great detail the kind of song I wanted them to make. Its wasn't just an exact request, but each artist created something even better than the reference I provided.”
I put my current thoughts and feelings into the lyrics
Among the songs included is "iDOLING" by Micro, former member of Def Tech, which was released digitally in January of this year. This is a sequel and updated version of 「Kanashī hodo ni a. i. do. ru”〜 garasu no kutsu 〜」, a solo song released in 2010 which was also produced by Micro. “If 「Kanashī hodo ni a. i. do. ru”〜 garasu no kutsu 〜」 is a song that captures the reality of that time, then “iDOLING” contains thoughts and hopes for the idol's life up to now, the past, the present , and a future that can never be separated, as well as the life of idols to come.”
“At the first, the song 『Kanashī hodo ni a. i. do. ru”〜 garasu no kutsu 〜』 was about my views on love and idols at that time, and 『iDOLING』 was about my true thoughts and feelings now, more than a decade later. Before we started production, I had many long discussions with Micro, and then he wrote the lyrics. He was able to sweeten my frank words, while still retaining the feelings that were spilling out of them, and he ended up creating something that exceeded my expectations, including the way he rhymed. The way he handles things so well makes me think he`s truly a magician of words. The way he handles things so well makes me think he is truly a magician of words.”
He has been at the center of the great whirlpool of the times and has been active as an idol in glamorous places since an early age. However, he seems to be calmly looking down on himself and the situation he finds himself in. That's why we'd like to ask the following question: What do you think is Ken Miyake's selling point as an idol?
“It's quite difficult for me to say it myself. But if you listen to this album, I think you'll understand (LOL)😂”
2nd Interview
Ken Miyake talks about “what he wants to do for his juniors” on his 30th debut anniversary
The person that Ken Miyake has always followed
Even as he ages, he continues to maintain her beautiful and sophisticated looks, and is also known as a "professional idol" due to him stoicism in never neglecting lessons and preparations to always deliver a perfect performance on stage, and his fan-first attitude. So Who is Miyake-san's "eternal idol"?
“Everyone would agree that SMAP is one of Japan's most representative super idols. I grew up admiring those people and that's what has made me who I`m today, and we`re the generation that has truly benefited from them. I think idols have developed their potential beyond just singing and dancing…..So I respect them a lot. That's why I hope that one day I can become someone who can pave the way for those younger than me🤗.
Many of his juniors work at the current agency, TOBE. His interactions with his juniors can be seen in the variety show "Tobeban," which is streamed live on YouTube, and the in-depth variety show "TOBE’s Summer Vacation," which aired on Abema in January this year. It is impressive to see Miyake-san kept his own pace, sometimes making fun, sometimes nagging, and creating a gentle atmosphere that allowed his juniors to behave without feeling intimidated.
“I'm thinking about what I can do now, not just for the TOBE artist, but for all everyone involved in the work of being an idol in the world of entertainment😊”
The determination and readiness I felt as a teenager to cherish my fans
“I think the act of falling in love with someone requires a huge amount of energy. When I do these activities, I often feel a variety of different emotions from different people...sometimes they`re happy, sometimes they`re sad, and there`re many other emotions that I'm exposed to. For example, I think many people come to concerts to take a break from everyday life. During the encore, when the lights came on and the venue brightened up, I could see the faces of the audience well, and while some people are smiling and looking like they're having fun, others are so moved they're crying, and some people are holding portraits of people they've lost, whether they're family or friends. When I saw those fans in my impressionable teenage years, I felt a sense of determination that I had to cherish the people who supported me like that, and that hasn't changed even now😀”
I want to continue evolving while also listening to the thoughts of my fans.
While he has his own sense of beauty, taste, thoughts, and intentions, he also has the flexibility to change and commit to the feelings of his fans and the trends of the times. That's why we wanted to ask him about the one thing he won't compromise on.
“The most important thing about my work is whether it moves me emotionally. On the other hand, I don't want to do anything that doesn't move me emotionally, and at the same time, I don't want to do work that I don't put any emotion into. Sometimes it's just an intuitive feeling like I'll enjoy it or something I'm not good at, But when I create something, whether it's a song or a live performance, I also have a strong desire to leave behind something that I put my heart into. I`ve unwavering feelings for the fans who have always supported me all these years, and I think that making those people happy is my number one priority.”
After saying that, there was a short pause and then he said, “That's a difficult point, though…”
“I don't want to leave everyone who has supported me up until now. The reason I feel this way is because I feel that I`ve received something so great.”
“Because I know that there`re people who look forward to my activities and who find meaning in their lives. That's why it's not a just one-way, but I also have to think about my fans... I think I`ve to think about each other's lives. That may be one of the things I want to convey to my juniors. I'm sure each of us has built relationships with our fans, so I want them to maintain that relationship well.”
The new path that Miyake-san is taking is one that no one has ever walked before, and it is a path that is unique to him. We look forward to seeing the views it will show us from there.

Jul. 14th, 2024 07:33 pmKen Miyake's latest album “THE iDOL”, which was just released in June, is a hot topic. We asked him about his thoughts on the “life of an idol” reflected in his work, his routine for keeping his mind and body healthy, and his attention to detail when it comes to decorating his room.
“I want to continue exploring the possibilities that idols have😊. “___ KEN MIYAKE
An “idol” is someone who can be anything!!
“What is an idol?”
When Ken Miyake started his solo career in 2022, he again asked himself about the existence of an idol. Ken said that the title of his new album “THE IDOL”, which was just released in June, reflects his own answer to that question.
“I`ve various titles such as artist, expressor, creator... But when I decided to do it myself, “idol” was the title that best described me. That's why I also wrote “occupation : idol” on my SNS profile. If you look up the word "idol" in a dictionary, it is defined as “figure”. I think of idols as "beings who can be anything'', in other words, they are genreless. The title of this album is "THE IDOL", which contains my favorite songs regardless of genre."
This album is a collection of truly genre-less and timeless songs that are not bound by any particular image, but what they all have in common is a pop and bright worldview. Many of the songs on the album are produced by up-and-coming artists whom Miyake-san personally approached.
The theme is “danceable songs like disco songs”. I want the fans who listen to it to also experience the joy of dancing. When I say dancing, I don't mean attempting difficult choreography; I would be happy if you could just surrender yourself to the music and feel the groove🧡. I wanted to change my character for each song, so I changed the way I sing and the quality of my voice, so I hope you enjoy that as well😉”.
“In 2010, I thought it would be interesting to recreate Kyoko Koizumi's 『なんてったってアイド ル』 with a modern sound, so I wrote a solo song called 『悲しいほどにア・イ・ド・ル』 together with with Micro Def Tech. This song is a realistic depiction of the feelings I had at the time, when I was 15 years old. Now that time has passed and I've been an idol for 30 years, I thought it would be interesting to create a song could be an answer song😊 This time too, I had many conversations with Micro and wrote the lyrics, incorporating my thoughts about my life as an idol until now💗”.
Now, Miyake has once again confronted the meaning and role of an "idol," do you want to become an idol in the future?
“I don't want dirt to accumulate, so I vacuum every morning and often sweep up fallen leaves outside with a broom and dustpan. If you leave it like that, dirt will stick to it when it rains. I don't want the sashes to get dirty, so I often clean around the windows. The trick to not making a mess is to not leave things out, and put them back in their rightful place each time. When I'm working, I tend to make a mess, but I try to put it away properly when I'm done and I don't leave it on the table.”
Miyake-san loves furniture, miscellaneous goods, and art, he`s also very particular about the interior design.
“My room is a mix of European vintage furniture, Japanese designer furniture, and contemporary designer furniture. It would be boring to narrow it down to just French furniture, or only furniture by the same artist…Even if they all come from different countries or eras, I love finding a affinity somewhere and create my own story and consider the placement🤗”.
Walking can help to clear your mind and heart.
“I also get advice about furniture from the furniture store I often visit and use it as a hint for coordinating my outfits😉”.
Miyake-san is often referred to as the "miracle man in his 40s" for his beauty and youth that belies his age, and one of the routines he uses to stay healthy is "walking."
“Instead of walking to get around, I try to walk slowly. If you walk while carrying luggage, your body will lose balance. Sometimes I listen to music, but when I walk around listening to the sounds of the hustle and bustle of the city, I feel like it clears my mind and my heart. If possible, I try to walk 30 minutes in the morning, and if I`ve time, I also try to walk at night. There`re things you can do now that you're in your 40s. Consciously taking deep breaths also seems to helps reset your mind and body. Lie on your back and breathe as if you`re pumping air into every joint, from your head to your toes. When you do this, your body relaxes and you release unnecessary force. Doing this breathing exercise before singing will help you feel more relaxed when singing. I'm sure this is true for everyone, but when you work in the same position, your body inevitably stiffens and your breathing becomes shallow. I think it's important to be aware of breathing.”
In his 40s, Miyake-san took on a new challenge to pursue a solo career. We asked each of them to give a message to readers of the same generation who are going through life stages and changes in mind and body.

Person in Focus
"The most important thing is don't make promises you can't keep ! "
Standing in a world of bright primary colors, him delicate and ephemeral presence becomes even more apparent. Ken Miyake who was praised by the public as “someone who has a miraculous age” instantly come to mind, and I could only nod.
The session between Miyake and photographer, Mika Ninagawa, continued to produce incredibly beautiful work, and there was a standing ovation when the shoot was over👏
Since opening his personal SNS in 2021, he has written "Occupation: Idol" in the profile section. However, Miyake's image as an idol seems a little different from the image of idols in general, right?
“When I decided working alone, I started thinking about what to call myself. Whether as an artist, creator, or expressive person...🤔But, it all doesn't feel right to me. I want to do a variety of things regardless of genre. So, if I had to categorize myself, I think idol would be the most best. When I looked it up again after saying my name, I realized that it meant idols. And I consider that a positive thing. Idols have an unknown amount of potential to become anything.”
This image is not a process or something you that you get rid of, but continues to to grow as it is, right?
“Last year, on my 44th birthday, I started a new beginning with TOBE. This is to achieve that goal. My new album will be released on June 5th. The title is THE IDOL.“

___Ken Miyake talks about his experiences and struggles over 30 years___
After the shoot, Miyake looked at the monitor and asked, “Do you want this piece for the cover?”while pointing to a temporary photo that the staff had modeled before the actual shoot. He also said Always remember to be playful.
“This time, I made an offer to artists from the younger generation in particular, because after 30 years of working as an idol, I wanted to discover a new side of myself by collaborating with people from the new generation.”
“For the main song 「ホーンテッド」, I wanted to betray my image in a good way, so I asked a young artist named WurtS-kun to do it. I chose songs that I liked as references and asked him for help [I want to make a song like this]. Of course he didn't follow the music I suggested, but it was made with what kind of music he wanted to make with me.”
“I tried a genre that I've never tried before, so I think this is a song that people can enjoy and enjoy the unexpectedness of what happens when I perform this genre with my voice. Anyway, this album is like a treasure chest because it contains everything I love, no matter the genre. This might be a bit messy, but I hope you enjoy it. In the beginning, idols are genreless beings. So, I wonder if I can express THE IDOL in that sense as well too”
So you created a piece using yourself as the subject matter?
“For example, among the various types of idols out there.. There`re many who love me because they feel a bit transience, and loneliness in me🤔”
“Until now, I`ve always faced my fans, thought about what I should do to make them happy in every situation, and dedicated my life to to being an idol😊”
“That's what I faced when producing “iDOLING” which was released in January. I`ve experience facing it more deeply than even before, like “What kind of idol is Ken Miyake?” This song is the latest version of the song I wrote with Micro• (Def Tech) in 2010 entitled 「悲しいほどにア・イ・ド・ル〜ガラスの靴~」”Kanashī hodo ni a i do ru 〜 Garasunokutsu”, and This song reflects the feelings I felt while living life as an idol. At that time I was talking with Micro for a long time about the song, and thinking that it had been a year since the last album, suddenly I felt like I was the only one left behind. Even though my surrounding environment has changed drastically, I was still an idol, and of course that was my choice...😀
That`s why, my various experiences and struggles were sublimated into [THE IDOL]”
“By the way, this album is also a code from me to my fans😉 I've been transmitting that code since “Ready To Dance”, and I think those who know it will be able to reveals the entirety of the code I wanted to convey by listening to this album🤭”
Even though times have changed.
Ehh....
“I dunno...but, I take care of my skin (LOL)😂”
“However, I consciously keep my sensitivity and try not to miss out on new information. Of course, I also watch Japanese dance idol groups and K-Pop.”
“Conducting market research is also necessary to find out your value. Now is the era when countries are competing to produce new idols, and it is very difficult to survive in this era. Everyone has discerning eyes these days, so if they find it boring, they won't look at it anymore. I think we live in very difficult times now, and if we don't continue to provide high-quality entertainment, people will soon turn away from us.”“Even though the eras have passed from Showa, Heisei, to Reiwa, the existence of idols still exists. After all, I feel like there is potential to become an idol. I thought idols have centripetal power. I think I`ve the power to make things happen, so I want to explore my potential even more. By updating the idol culture consumed in the short term and exploring the potential of idols, I believe that we can prepare a brighter future for the next generation of idols, especially for Japanese idols.”
In March "to HEROes ~TOBE 1st Super Live~" was held at Tokyo Dome, where TOBE artists gathered, they are closer to the hearts of their fans than anyone else. During the MC part, Miyake said “Do you all want to meet me?” “I also want to meet you” and "It's so happy to meet someone we all loves". Not only made the audience present excited but also the fans who watched streaming were also excited by the presence of a veteran idol.
When we asked what his future ambitions were, he answered with a smile, “I want to go horse riding” 😂😂
A feeling that I`ll never forget.
“I think not only my fans, but also fans of other artists spend their days feeling very sad, feeling lost because they might never be able to see each other again. It's the same for us, and I`ll never forget how I felt at that time. It was our first reunion, so I think everyone who came to the Dome and those who watched the streaming were very happy. I just expressed those feelings with words...But again, everyone, apart from my fans without saying anything, they colored their penlights orange, which is my members' color, as if they wanted to show everyone and made a sea of orange🧡”
“It was wonderful, and I was so happy with that feeling🥰 I was happy to see the blue bear penlight, which was a merchandise from my solo concerts in the past, was shining brightly, although I was a little doubtful in some places. And that's a signal that only me and my fans can understand😗😉
“However, because I was slower than my juniors in producing songs, and I had only released two songs, there were four songs that I suddenly performed for the first time at the Dome. Honestly, I regret that I couldn't have gotten excited about this song because even my fans didn't know it (LOL)😅
Before my next concert, I want everyone to listen to this album and have fun together😄
In June, the solo concert will be held at Ariake Arena in Tokyo. This is an attempt by TOBE artists to hold individual performances using the same stage.”
An expression that only I can express~
“In the past few years, I haven't been able to hear fans' cheers because of the corona virus. And I would love to hear the fans cheer in the Dome for the first time in a long time. After all, I think the real joy of a live concert is that you can sing, playful, and for that moment, you can forget about the difficult things that come with everyday life and free your mind🥰 I want them to enjoy this moment to the fullest, and I`ll do my best to enjoy it too😊 I also want to give a performance that will make them feel excited for tomorrow😉”

During the MC part, Miyake said “Would you all like to meet me?” “I also want to meet you” and "It's so happy to meet someone we all loves".

Ken Miyake was fascinated by video poetry at the Espace Louis Vuitton Osaka "Isaac Julien" exhibition
-🧡-🧸-🧡-
British artist Isaac Julien's solo exhibition is being held at Espace Louis Vuitton Osaka until Sunday, September 22. Ken Miyake, who is an art expert and also an art collector who decorates his house with works by his favorite artists, explained the appeal of "Ten Thousand Waves" which will be shown for the first time in Japan. Isaac Julien will also comment on his work.

Global migration and workforce. Expressing issues that are still relevant today through art
Isaac Julien, who started his career as one of the leaders of the movement of British filmmakers who used video as a means of expressing social action, always raises contemporary issues through his video works. The video installation Ten Thousand Waves, which was shown at the 17th Sydney Biennale in 2010, depicts 23 illegal Chinese workers collecting shellfish in Morecambe Bay, northern England. The theme of this work is based on a tragic accident that lost their lives.
“I created this work about 14 years ago, but in my opinion the global societal movements it deals with remain a huge political issue. This incident is told in an allegory. This is not from my perspective, but from the perspective of Mazu, a goddess worshiped by people involved in the fishing industry in China's Fujian province. In China, There is a legend that they will bring the dead back to life, so I created this work to pay tribute to those who died in shipwrecks.” (Isaac Julien)
After six years of research and dialogue, Julien added a cast that included such renowned actors as Maggie Cheung and Zhao Tao, who agreed with his idea, and artist Yang Fudong of Greater China, including calligrapher Gong Fagen.
Viewers who see the work will feel swept away and trapped in a floating sea.
When you walk into the room (Ten Thousand Waves), you forget time or where you are...you feel as if you have walked into a labyrinth. Nine large screens are installed in a space painted in Klein Blue, and viewers can freely walk between the screens displaying different images and watch the approximately 50-minute work while moving.
“When it comes to setting up the space itself, the color blue also has a theme. Blue is the color of the sea. This shows the ocean where Chinese workers died, and may also be associated with the color Yves Klein Blue. The reason why I chose nine screens was because I wanted to completely change the image viewing experience. As the viewer moves around and views it from various positions, I want the viewer to feel the immersive feeling of being surrounded by this installation art. I think it is a special experience where you can move freely and see things from different perspectives and angles.” (Isaac Julien)
“As the title "Ten Thousand Waves", the audience is guided as if drifting or trapped in the rolling ocean. Likewise with the way these works are presented, and the way the audience is moved by this collection of works...I thought works like that are very interesting." (Ken Miyake)
”Warmth like a mother's body”――――The memories felt like they were coming back to life.
“The images would flicker from screen to screen at different times, and sometimes light up at the same time, so my feet would naturally move to different places instead of staying in one place. By moving the angle of view, It felt like I was floating in the ocean waiting for the waves...The sound suddenly stopped again, and just when I thought I was surrounded by silence, the sound grew louder. It feels like people are moved, like waves that come and go. This space is also blue and looks like an ocean, so it feels like you are being swallowed by a sea of images that Isaac created. But even so, whatever it is, I feel like it brings back memories of [the warmth of a mother's body]. It's a very weird feeling, and it's a artworks that makes me want to see it again and again.
Although this work is based on an real maritime accident, there are also fictions created by Isaac in the story. There are many moments in the 50 minute film that touched my heart. I believe that everyone feels different things when looking at a work of art, so I thought it would be interesting to visit close friends and share different feelings.”
I love the idea that art “there” as a part of life.
Miyake-san was influenced by his grandfather, who worked at an art museum, and was exposed to art on a daily basis from an early age. He loves art and is also an art collector.
“The museum where my grandpa worked was our meeting place. While waiting for him to finish his work, I looked at the exhibition there. That's why, art has been around me since I was young.
When I saw Tomoo Gokita's monochrome portrait more than ten years ago, I was fascinated by the monochrome metallic charm and fell in love at first sight. “I wanted to have Gokita-san's artwork at home”, and that's when I became really interested in art. I have previously bought silk screen prints and other works, but this is the first time I want to have a canvas work at home.
For me, art is something that must exist in everyday life. I really love the way things appear naturally in my view as I go about my daily life. Rather than facing it and seeing it again, I preferred the idea of it “there” as part of my life.
A new visual experience of video art that immerses us into a visual world.
Benches painted in Klein Blue are scattered throughout the room, blending in with the walls. “I wanted to create a new way of looking at video art,''[Isaac Julien]. When you sit in a chair between the screens and watch, many images unfold before your eyes. Surrounded by sound, you immediately enter the world of work. By viewing the work from various points of view, such as standing, walking between the screens, or sitting in a chair, you can become more immersed in the world of the work of art.
I think it is very important to know the background of a work or artist.
“Art enhances a person's creativity. When I direct concerts myself, sometimes I get ideas from art. And vice versa, sometimes I feel music from works of art. It's very important to know the artist's background, because of that you can enjoy their work more and fall in love with the artist even more.”

See you in the next translation~ ♡
That's cool!! Very suitable for you. Thank you😊The more you do it this way, the more things you want to do and the more fun you get, but the more difficult it becomes. However, I can't achieve all this alone, so I'm going to ask talented people to help me create it. That's why my music has such wonderful styling, and because I don't create all the music myself, so it's made possible by the involvement of very talented people. It's really fun to put my hobbies and think about whether this type of music would suit for me or whether I should ask someone to help me to do that.
This is only possible if you are always “sensitive” wherever you`re. If I think about it, the song I played as the first song at the Tokyo Dome show also emerged from a certain meeting. During production, I was wondering if there were any artists I didn't know that I could make music with. Then I asked a part-time DJ at a cafe what kind of music he was listening to these days. When I said, “I'm looking for a good demo”, and he said to me, “I know someone who makes a good demo”. He asked me, “Do you want to listen to it when you are relaxing?”, that's when I listened to the music, and it turned out to be a really good song. So, I immediately contacted that person and asked them to create music for me.
We can't know that from the number of followers. I really thought so. There`re still many young and talented people who are not yet known to the world. I want more great talents to be discovered, and want to collaborate and meet new talents. I would be happy if more people could share their talents through this opportunity. This is also one of the reasons why I`m active as a solo artist.
It seems like you're very good at using your time even when you're busy, like going out on your own to scout for talents. Are you someone who really emphasizes efficiency? Hummm, Well...I'd like to emphasize efficiency, but there`re many cases where things don't work well. I often wasting my time🙃
Now, “NYLON JAPAN” is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, so can you flashback to what you did 20 years ago? I'm 24 years old! At that time, I wanted to get better at dancing. At that time, I was really bad at dancing. There was a strong feeling that I wasn't good at dancing.
But, you were in an environment where you had to dance, right? That's right (LOL)😅 When I met a dancer I admired, my mindset completely changed. When I saw someone dancing, I wanted to dance like that, so I took dancing lessons for about a year. And thanks to that, I fell in love with dancing.
Did you get rid of your complex there? You got it…That was about 20 years ago, when I was about 24 years old.
That was a pretty turning point, right? Yes... Maybe because of that meeting I still continues to dance even now. Maybe because of that meeting I still dance until now. The more you pursue dance, the deeper it becomes, so I think there are dances that can only be performed by young people, and there`re also dances that can't be expressed until you`re older.
That means there are limits to your dancing performance depending on age, but it's great to hear you're taking things further with ease. Dancing is based on joy or hobby, so if you want to dance, you can dance, even if they`re elderly. Of course, the level and intensity may be different compared to when I was younger, but I can still express myself just by shaking my body, and that's all part of dance. your body frees you and if you find it enjoyable, then it becomes a beautiful dance, so I want to keep dancing.
And what kind of future vision do you have in 20 years? Hummm..I'm 64 years old…😅I thought I'd live a semi-retired life and relaxing (LOL)😂 And at that time, I just wanted to do what I liked. It would be great if I could pursue my hobby.
That's nice. Lastly, please tell us about essentials “THANK YOU💗'' in your personal life. Hummm···I wonder what······. Oh, it's a cactus!🌵
Cactus ?! Yes..This has been my hobby for the past few years, and now I`ve more than 20 pots at home😁
Have you already seen beautiful flowers blooming this year? Bloomed🌸When I look at those flowers, I feel peace and happy. It's a bit difficult to take care more than 20 pots (LOL)😂
Miyake-san, are you the type to give cacti names? Yes..I give my cacti names😄I talk to them and raise them well. However, if there`re a lot of pots, it will be a little difficult to find a place for them to grow. I feel sorry for them if they don't have a sunny place 😢
If you found a cute wild cactus, would you want to take it home? No…I'll check it carefully at the store. They`re living organisms, and we`ve a sense of responsibility towards them.
The flower language for cactus is eternal love, passion, and a burning heart. Do you know about that? No…I just found out (LOL)😂But when I think about it, I think it's even cuter (LOL) 🤣
Part 1
Of course! I remember. I shot with models who were much younger than me, and I always get inspired😉
It's been a long time since I last appeared,Do you remember when you were serializing “BOY MEETS GIRL” in this magazine?
Um yeah…I love clothes, so the meetings and photo shoots were really fun. I was able to wear brands that I wouldn't normally wear, and I remember discovering new things each time. the photographer was different each time, it was interesting to see how the worldview changed depending on the staff who created that issue. I'm really looking forward to talking to such creative people.
How was it to shoot at NYLON for the first time in a while?
It was really fun😄This time too, there were several styles that I had never worn, I was inspired. The jacket with the patchwork motif was especially decorative and wonderful, and I'm looking forward to seeing the final photos.
This issue is our 20th anniversary issue, so the theme is "THANK YOU💗” What are you grateful for right now?
First of all, I want to thank everyone at NYLON because we can meet again. NYLON also made me realize the possibilities of various fashion styles. Hummm..when I think of the people I`ve to thank who are very necessary for me now and in the future, the first thing that comes to my mind is my fans😙
Is it the same since your debut?
Yeah…I feel like it's something that hasn't changed, or rather that it's gotten stronger and stronger over the years.
The other day, "to HEROes~TOBE 1st Super Live~" was held at Tokyo Dome, and it seemed like you were even more excited by meeting face to face with your fans for the first time in a long time. I really think so😄It's been a few years since I couldn't cheer because of the coronavirus pandemic, so hearing everyone cheer for the first time in a long time made my heart happy. This concert was held at a time when the world was becoming more energetic, and I was very happy to hear everyone's excited cheers. And most importantly, I was touched that I could meet my fans and I wanted to express my feelings for the first time in a long time at a concert. Of course all my fans are special to me, but precisely because they are there for me as people who perform and entertain them, I feel better. When I think about it, the only thing that most important to me is my fans🧡
After the live performance at the Dome, many people were waiting for Miyake-san to post your impressions during the concert on SNS.
I'm very thankful. Even though I`ve many different jobs, I realized once again that what I like most is spending time with my fans at concerts. The louder the fans cheered, the more excited I became, and felt like I was going to places I could never go alone. Of course I was nervous, but thanks to everyone, I was able to stand there with confidence, so I'm grateful from the bottom of my heart😊
For Miyake-san, have those feelings changed since your debut?
Huum…Concerts are such a fun place. Talking about the extraordinary and the ordinary, concerts and entertainment are places where you can experience the extraordinary. I think everyone faces a lot of painful and difficult things in their daily lives. But it's nice to forget those things and spend time with them, and it's also a very important time for me.
It has been decided that you will hold a solo concert at Ariake Arena in June, but what kind of concert do you have in mind right now?
I can't say anything yet because it would be a spoiler, but I want to sing a lot. But, so far I've only released a few songs (LOL). From now on I'm going to create a lot of songs !!!
Looking forward to it. You've released songs as digital singles before, but what were you thinking when creating your latest song?
I've released an album as a solo artist, but since I've always liked minor music, there were a lot of songs that were a little darker. But this time, I wanted to deliver a song that would brighten and cheer up the world. SIRUP, who created “Ready To Dance,” and Micro from Def Tech, who created “IDOLING,” were also looking in a very positive direction and enjoying creating their work, so I'm happy if that atmosphere was conveyed to you.
The selection of music producer also reflects the current situation, but how do you choose the creators of the content you offer?
Basically, I produce my own songs, so I also offer them to people I think are great.
The song's lyrics reflect the mood of the time, and although “IDOLING'' is positive. It seems like it would be nice to have a side like that in a good way. Did you discuss and decide on the message of the song?
Yeah…The production process took place after much discussion. Actually, I previously made a song with Micro called “kanashii hodo ni a i do ru ~ garasu no kutsu ~” 「悲しいほどにア・イ・ド・ル~ガラスの靴~」. This song was included as a bonus track so it hasn't been released much, but at that time it was made with the aim of making the 2010 version of Kyoko Koizumi's 2010 version of the idol song 「なんてったってアイドル」. At that time, I sang about how being an idol made it impossible for me to fall in love normally, but this song “IDOLING” is a song that reflects the true feelings that I feel right now.
It's really wonderful to be able to work with the same members again after 10 years.
Of course. I would be happy if all fans listened to the song with great excitement😄🧡
By the way, are you the type of person who can honestly say "thank you" in your private life?
Well..I'm that type. I try to not only say thank you, but also apologize by saying “I'm sorry”. When I think something is really good, I'm the type of person to express it in a message. Over the past few years, I've realized that "thank you" and "sorry" have a shelf life.
Indeed, that's right. Those words have a heart-touching meaning.
Yes....Even if I feel it in my heart. The more time passes, the harder it is to tell, and if something strange happens, I`ll eventually not be able to see each other again. After realizing this, I started to express it more clearly.
So, what are you enjoying in your personal life?
I love fashion, so I often go shopping for new clothes or looking at furniture. I also often go to see art.
What kinds of art are you interested in?
After all, I felt a strong desire to have something that I could love for a long time. I prefer things that have universal appeal and things that never go out of style.
Is it the same for clothes?
Well...for everyday clothes, I prefer to wear clothes that I like from a long time ago. But, when it comes to work I'm always looking for something new. And recently I worked with Stefan Cooke and MIKAGE SHIN. Since then, I started wanting to wear clothes that can be worn by both men and women without any boundaries. Maybe this is my current mood.
Are you the type of person who gets really into it once you get addicted to it?
Yes😊Also, as I've gotten older, I've started to place more importance on the silhouette and feel of the material.
If you make a similar series in this magazine again, it seems like you will choose a completely different brand.
In the past, it had a pop feel to it, but I think it might have a more adult nuance. When you think about it, there`s a lot of good fashion now, and the number of jacket models is also increasing.
Your jacket style changes as you get older
Yeah..😊Also, depending on the venue, such as a classic venue or a gala dinner, I`ve to a bit formal, so I'm starting to bring some jackets. I'm really looking forward to learning more about fashion, as I'm sure to discover new brands there. But, lately I think it would be a problem if I liked too many things🙃
Why ?
I'm interested in a lot of things, but I wish I could think about one thing that doesn't really matter. I like clothes, I like furniture, and I love cars, but it's hard to manage them all (LOL)😂
Seems like there's nothing wrong with that (LOL)
The more I noticed about something, the deeper it gets, the more I wonder what will happen next (LOL).

“TOBE’s Summer Vacation” was broadcast on ABEMA last December.
~Exclusive coverage of Hawaii! New determination~”.
What the affiliated talent gathered in Hawaii demonstrated was a realistic depiction of team unity, even as they struggled with various activities.
Ken Miyake, one of those who led TOBE's successful appearance at the Tokyo Dome in March this year, recalled last year's trip to Hawaii, which could be considered the beginning of the team building.
Miyake : Hawaii has a pleasant climate all year round, and there's always a pleasant breeze. It's nice that time passes slowly and there is plenty of nature. This time, we had the last day off, so a friend who lives in Hawaii took us to Ko Olina Resort on Oahu, and we stayed on the beach until sunset. It was very comfortable and I decided to stay at the Four Seasons next time😉
Miyake : The Korean barbecue we've had is really delicious😋
Miyake : Actually, I was quite careful that night. Nobody invited me, so I was wondering about what to do for dinner that night, but when I heard that Kitayama and IMP. were together, I said, “Eh, they haven't invited me.”
Miyake : I thought it would be a bad idea to join in without permission, but I heard that Number_i also joined in. If that happens, it looks like I'm the only one not going, so I decided to go too (LOL)😂
Miyake : And yeah, the misunderstanding was happily cleared up (LOL)😆
Miyake : What's interesting is that just before that day, Number_i was filming a game of rock-paper-scissors on location. On nights when everyone got together, I was the oldest who was going to pay, but for some reason it turned out to be a manly game of rock, paper, scissors, and Hirano Sho won.
Miyake : I prefer relaxing in a hotel rather than being active. Some say a grown man can look at the sea without getting wet. (Ken looks at the sea from a distance (at the hotel)). The only thing I wanted to do was hike the Billbox Trail in Lanikai and relax on Kailua Beach, once voted the best beach in America.
Miyake : But I don't really want to go into the water(LOL)😅
Miyake : I went to see the stars at midnight and it was very beautiful✨🌙💫If I flashback again, we did a lot of different things (LOL)😊
Miyake : After come back to Japan, I was talking about Hawaii with a friend at a cafe, and a staff member there happily said, “We are also going on a company trip to Hawaii.” I thought it would be great to go to Hawaii for a company event. Half of TOBE's trip to Hawaii was for work, but I think we were able to experience something out of the ordinary and have some of the conversations that were born out of being able to relax.
Miyake : I want to go with everyone again😄 Hawaii also has many other islands, not just Oahu.
